I have been feeling like a reptile that is having a difficult time shedding its skin cause the humidity is too thick. In otherwords I'm trying to do something new but it seems like nobody can notice.
I'm going through an artist breakdown. I'm hitting a point where if I don't change my style I'm going to go nowhere with it. It's time I try something different as much as I really don't want to but I'm sick and fucking tired of hearing "They're good but...it's too
anime" usually I don't care what other's think but if I want to graduate and have a higher chance of getting a job I may have no choice but to bite my tongue and through away what little microscopic pride I have...
It's really killing what little confidence I had with my own art and driving me CRAZY! I don't really have any cartoon style that inspires me enough to 'mimic' so this is EXTRA hard for me. I mean I like a lot of cartoons but I never really considered doing a similar style I always wanted to create my own but I have 0 inspiration...*sigh* I don't know what to do anymore I'm almost close to giving up but this is the only talent I have.
I also deleted a LARGE amount of my Naruto fanart out of frustration. I don't want to be only known for it (maybe my horror stuff but not naruto). I quit the series anyways so it had to go. I really regret doing any of it honestly since I deleted about 68 drawings in total >_o that's very BAD. I'm sorry for those that are only watching me for it but it had to go. I may lose some watchers but oh well I need to finally shed my skin.
Horror fan art stays since it doesn't really mess with style.
Sorry for this rant, but I haven't been feeling good about my art all this summer and my last class kinda just snapped my last twig...
I need someone to help me with this I feel like I'm in a void now.

I'm American and I can't get my English right!
...I can see why people would consider your art to be 'too anime', but personally I think you do have your own style.
Yes you may use the 'anime style' as somewhat of a base; but I can actually see some uniqueness within the art itself.
We all have something of a 'base' that we work from. We see a style we enjoy and yearn to use that style ourselves... but after a while some of us actually turn it into something of our own; whereas some just stick to someone elses style.
No one can invent a style because theyre all over the place
There is no real set style to anything! There is no real 'specific form of anime', or specific form of Disney or whatever...
Yes they may use certain small things in their art that is recognisable; but that's about it...
I mean; some people would look at art from; say; Demon diary- [link]
And One piece- [link]
And know theyre from the same genre of drawing anime but theyre not the same style!
Anyone can draw however the hell they want! If youve found your comfortable spot; then stick to it! Who cares what anyone says! If they dont like the style; then thats their choice Can you imagine if Picasso or Dali put away their paint brushes because someone told him their art looked weird and they should paint this way ?
If you feel you may want to give something else a try; then have a whack at it; theres no harm in trying something new You may even pick up a few things you find handy; and if you dont like it, then you can just go back to what you feel comfortable with.
No word of a lie; about a week ago I was thinking about the Disney style and how for years Ive wanted to draw like it
I see such great art all over the place; and I really wanted to draw my characters in this style because I enjoyed it so much
I knew how much hard work it would be; and if anything it just got me really down because I was certain Id never be able to achieve what these artists have achieved Im no where near as good as them
But the more I thought about it; the more I realised I wanted to stick to what I was using at the moment I think the only thing I was having a bit of trouble with was how I draw noses but that was it There are a lot of other things, but I know Ill nail them with more practice.
Id started with the whole manga style a few years back. Id always watched the shows (without realising they were manga lol) when I was a kid; and I loved the idea of drawing in this style
But I just couldnt hack it. I saw my drawings and what was in the books and it wasnt the same Me kept getting in the way.
Since I was a kid; I had a certain look to my drawings, no matter what I drew, there were always certain little things that were in each drawing that I could see which told you it was me that drew it And to be honest I hated it
I didnt like how I drew because I thought it looked crap
Well now Ive reached something Im rather comfortable with. I may need to touch up on a few things here and there; but Im not going to totally alter my style if a few people arent happy with what I draw
If youre looking for a career in art then in what field; and what are you hoping to achieve with it?
If need be; try something a little different; but use the style youre using at the moment in your personal drawings, like for your comics or your horror art.
Personally I think you have a wicked style and yeah I am jealous of you
(You cow lol)
And I really dont think you should change anything!
I didnt watch you because I liked a specific character youre drawing or because I thought you had an anime style or anything... its because I enjoyed looking at your art; I could see you had great talent; you have excellent ideas and youre just one funny fucker!
Draw what YOU want! If you turn into a robot; then soon enough it will start to show up in your art.
Theres never any harm in trying something new; but dont go making any dramatic changes because you feel you HAVE to! You should do what you want to do! This is your love; your hobby, and you shouldnt change it just because it doesnt suit someone else! Theres plenty of other artists out there that draw in the style these people like; so they can just go and watch them; instead of trying to get you to change what you enjoy
.Oops I just ranted

Really, it doesn't matter what style you draw in, just that you have the foundation knowledge to back it up. Your style will change, but that knowledge doesn't.
It may be a good idea not to stop drawing anime, but to instead deconstruct how you draw anime. Go through basic design principals and attach them to a drawing.
You may learn something, and you'll be able to apply that knowledge to a different style.

I hope, no I refuse to let you lose face! You are a great artist and have worked hard to rise to your status quo. I am sure you will go far with your talent you are assured a great job.
I'm am saddened that you took down you fan art of Naruto, for each piece helped build to your development. Though to each his/her own,if that is what you felt you had to do then I will be behind you and merely expect more, no even better works in the 68 pieces you took down, place.
I'll be here waiting patiently for their replacements and until then and even afterwards DO NOT EVER GIVE UP AND I'M ALWAYS RIGHT BEHIND YOU WHEN NEEDED YOU WILL GO FAR!!!

I see you yet you ignore me,
I'll listen yet you refuse to speak to me,
I'm always here for you, but you wont let me be,
One day I hope you'll open up to me until then I be here always by your side.

You are traveling through space, you are looking for somewhere to settle - it cannot be here. Nobody likes you and you are beginning to understand why.
(I kinda scattered brained on this, so forgive me)
Tch...I don't get who says your art is still too anime though. I mean, seriously what is "too anime"? DFN summed it up perfectly there. Just like the western art, they all have different styles, and same for anime. Just look at Medabots to...I believe it was Bastard or Berserk.
Tch it's people like that that piss me off since I hate when people have such little knowledge that they just jump to what they think is right.
Example just happened in my Painting class, a guy in my class got the Chimera for his project and kept calling it a pokemon and kept saying it was a "charmander" and "char" "char".
That's ignorance right there. Tell me how the hell a mythlogical creature become something that was made back in '97? It really pissed me off. I might like Pokemon, but I know the difference.
Ok, that example might not have been the best, but see it this way, some people that just don't get how to describe something run to the first thing they can think of. Since your art doesn't scream "Justice League Unlimited" they run to the next option "Inuyasha". Tch.
Really, I'd say you're "Avatar" ...a hybrid!
Your art style is yours. Like you told me before your art is a hybrid of anime and western. Hell, I've compared your old art to your new stuff and anyone that says that your art is "too anime" needs to see your old art. That was anime, what your have now a great hybrid that uses both sides of the world. I love the goofyness which a serious design. That's what I marvel about you.
The time I have know you, I have seen you struggle to change your style from Anime. I firmly believe you have achived that goal. Don't let others bring you down. If this is a teacher saying this...they're too slow. I'm not making a joke there, I mean they're out of date.
Truthfully, I think Naruto helped you too. You even told me that before. Sure it's more of a thorn in your side now, but it did help you improve in some areas.
Sorry, I really suck at saying this kind of stuff online cause I tend to not say what I want to say fully right, but I hope you understand what I mean.
Your art is yours and it's not anime. if your art was anime, I wouldn't have the love for your art. You really do remind me of one of my favorite artist, Spunky. I wonder what people would say on her art then...too cartoony? WTF mate.
BTW, anime is cartoon. >_> Some people will never understand that. Same for Manga is comic.
I'm really sorry you're having to take this crap...again. Don't let them put you down. Please don't give up on what you love. You're flexible.
We all know not everyone will like your art, but remember there are also people that will like your art. It's a rule of human nature. Don't let those haters hurt you.
I'll always support you dude.
I'm still a bit lost with my style still, but I won't let others put me down...fully. Don't be like me on that. Stand strong, you have way too much talent to let go like the Dodo.
Least you have change in these years, I'm still scared to move out of my comfort zone.
Please don't go realism.
